The Sacramento Mohawks: Goal-Oriented Men and Women

The Volunteers of America-sponsored Sacramento Mohawks Street Soccer USA program includes men’s and women’s teams largely made up of current and former clients of Volunteers of America’s Transitional Housing and Job-Development Program at Mather Community Campus.

Coached by Volunteers of America Case Manager Chris Mann since 2008, the men's team has competed for three consecutive years in the SSUSA Cup in Washington, D.C., earning international media coverage, as well as hometown recognition by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.

In 2009, the same year that the Mohawks won the SSUSA Fair Play award, the SSUSA committee selected Mohawks goalie Wes Colter for the national team that would play in the Homeless World Cup in Milan, Italy.

The following year, standout Mohawks striker Lisa Wrightsman joined the U.S. contingent that traveled to Rio de Janeiro for the 2010 Homeless World Cup. This year, Wrightsman traveled to France to coach the newly formed Lady Mohawks team.

On June 1, 2011, Wrightsman was honored at the annual SSUSA Sports for Social Change Awards in Washington, D.C., with the league's Achievement Award.
