In 1896, the musical form known as “ragtime” was born; the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Plessy v. Ferguson; gold was discovered in the Yukon Territory; and social reformers Maud and Ballington Booth founded Volunteers of America.
Envisioning a movement dedicated to “reaching and uplifting” the American people, the Booths pledged to “go wherever we are needed, and do whatever comes to hand.”
That declaration continues to guide Volunteers of America’s outreach efforts today.
Today, our services are delivered through a partnership of professional staff, volunteers and other community supporteers.
To commemorate Volunteers of America's 114th anniversary (and 99 years in Sacramento!), we are celebrating Founders Week March 8-12.
On March 11, the Volunteers of America Residential Family Center hosted a special Founders Week celebration that also served to recognize the "birthday" of our Greater Sacramento office. Set for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the event allowed guests the opportunity to visit with the families staying at the emergency shelter and participate in cupcake decorating and games with the children there.
